Bilbrough Time Line

~       1086 Domesday Book: Bilbrough is listed as Mileburg.  Bilbrough was in the possession of Richard, son of Erfast (probably the Erfast who was Bishop of Thetford in 1070).  The church was probably a Saxon structure preceding the Norman church 


~       1315 Roger Basy, son of the former Lord Mayor of York, Walter de Basy, owned the manor of Bilbrough


~       1425 The manor of Bilbrough was in the hands of Elizabeth, widow of Richard Basy. Soon afterwards it passed to the Nortons


~       1492 John Norton, Lord of the Manor of Bilbrough, added the tiny south chapel to the village church of St. James’s in 1492.  His tomb lies within the chapel 


~       1556 The estate was purchased by Sir William Fairfax of nearby Steeton Hall.  The Fairfaxes had been major landowners in the Tadcaster area since the 17th century.  They retained links with Bilbrough until the early 1940s when the estate was sold


~       1635 Map made of “Lordship of Bilbroughe, within the Ainsty of the City of York, taken for the right honourable Thomas Fairfax, Baron of Cameron.” (at Leeds Archives)


~       1645 Thomas Fairfax, 3rd Lord Fairfax, given control of Parliament’s New Model Army 


~       1671 Thomas (‘Black Tom’) Fairfax died, aged 60. His black marble tomb lies in the Norton chapel of Bilbrough Church  


~       1792 Map drawn of Bilbrough Estate, taken from a 1715 map, shows grazing lands of Bilbrough & Catterton Commons  (Leeds Archives)


~       1838 Tithe map of Bilbrough shows tithe & tithe-free land, colour-coded.  Fields named but not properties, landowners & tenants listed. Three Hares: “Hare Inn”


~       1872 The Norman church of St. James was rebuilt, incorporating John Norton’s 15th century chapel 


~       1943 Sale of Bilbrough Estate
